Niu Chen Zer & Janine Chang
2008 Release
Equally comfortable in front of and behind the camera, Doze Niu Chen Zer is one of the most recognizable faces in the Taiwan entertainment industry. As an actor, he has appeared in over 30 films including Hou Hsiao Hsien's The Boys From Fengkuei, Growing Up, and Millennium Mambo. As a television director, he has proven to be the rare talent who can create affecting art and human drama in a completely commercial context, with his trendy dramas Toast Boy's Kiss, Say Yes Enterprise, and Come to My Place remaining some of the best titles the genre has to offer. Making his big screen directorial debut in 2007, Doze Niu lays bare his life and work with what on earth have I done wrong?!, which was nominated for Best Film at the 44th Golden Horse Awards. Part self-expose, part mockumentary, and part drama, what on earth have I done wrong?! presents a bold, scathing, and probing portrait of man that is entertaining, contemplative, and painfully familiar for all those pursuing happiness in a frustrating world.
In a brilliant display of art reflecting and distorting reality, Doze Niu stars as an actor and television director named Doze Niu who decides to make his first feature film. Before the cameras ever start rolling, however, Doze suddenly finds himself without a leading actor or a budget. In order to raise money for his movie, he starts calling up all his industry connections and potential investors. All the rubbing of elbows only leads to a restless cycle of sex, drugs, and drinking, with no money to show for it. With his girlfriend (Janine Chang, Silk), set to leave him and his life descending into absurdity, will Doze ever get to make his film?
