Story line:
Shinohara Ryouko plays Azuma Sachiko, a mother with a son named Hikaru. As Hikaru grows up Sachiko notices that he is very slow to develop. While other children Hikaru's age are already speaking full sentences, Hikaru still cannot speak a word. Also, Hikaru likes to take objects off of shelves and out of drawers around the house and throw them around. When in public, Hikaru is a constant nuisance with his tantrums and strange behavior. When Sachiko tries to discipline him, he looks away and will not pay attention when people talk to him

Sachiko spends much time taking him to doctors to find out what's wrong with him and what can be done. Finally, Hikaru is diagnosed as autistic. Sachiko doesn't know anything about the condition, so she asks stupid questions like "What did I do wrong?" and "How long will it take to cure it?" She is told that Hikaru's condition is permanent.

At first Sachiko decides that the diagnosis might be wrong, and tries, unsuccessfully, to find evidence to prove that Hikaru is normal. She doesn't tell her husband or close relatives about the diagnosis immediately. After she reads more about the symptoms of autism, however, she eventually becomes fully convinced that Hikaru is, indeed, autistic. She tells her husband about this one day in the car while Hikaru is asleep. He is not ready to accept this sudden news and becomes angry at Sachiko. Her mother-in-law finds out soon after. None of the other characters know anything about autism either, so her mother-in-law blames Sachiko for "raising him wrong". Later, even Sachiko's husband admits that he blames her for Hikaru's condition, and begins to hate her...
