2007 Release
Chinese fans of Korean actor Ji Jin-hee are coming to Korea in droves to mark the release of his latest film, "The Old Garden". Ji earned a huge following in China after the nation aired TV drama "Jewel in the Palace" ("Dae Jang Geum"),in which he starred. He now has more than 100,000 fans belonging to some 130 fan clubs.
His agent said a number of Chinese fans have come to Korea in time for last Thursday's theater release of "The Old Garden", starring Ji and Yeom Jeong-ah. Ji's fans showered him with love and support whenever he showed up at movie theaters to promote his film. Ji receives so many gifts from his Chinese fans that his agent has to hire people to carry them all. Ji thanked the fans for their enthusiastic affection, saying that he was moved upon learning that some 300 Hong Kong fans were learning Korean to watch "The Old Garden".
Director Lim Sang-soo's latest film "The Old Garden" is adapted from a best-selling novel. The melodrama is about a love affair between a pro-democracy activist and a young teacher. The two are torn apart just six months into their relationship after the man is sentenced to prison for anti-government activities. The film is set during Korea's turbulent era of the late 1980s when university students took to the streets demanding democracy.
Hyun-woo steps out of prison after a 17-year sentence for his anti-government activities. During his long imprisonment, everything has changed even his fellow anti-government protesters have become mundane. His mother then tells him of the death of Yoon-hee, who harbored and loved him right before he was caught 17 years ago. To cherish memories with her, Hyun-woo goes back to the place where the two had spent a few months together like a couple of honeymooners. Reading through Yoon-hee’s diaries and letters, Hyun-woo discovers that she was the only one who remained loyal to him to the end. Because of her faith and love, the despair and loneliness that Hyun-woo felt after his imprisonment is slowly healed. He also discovers that Yoon-hee left him another gift behind their daughter.
