2008 Release

The son of a famous pianist, fifth-grader Shuhei has been trained to continue the family tradition practically since birth. Determined to follow in his father's footsteps, he likes to show off his piano-playing talents. When Shuhei transfers to a new school, on the very first day he hears about the legend of an old piano in the forest that only very special pianists can play. No matter how hard he tries, Shuhei can't draw a note from the piano. But when his classmate Kai, a poor boy from the red light district, places his fingers over the keys, beautiful music flows from the rundown piano.

Based on the popular manga by Makoto Isshiki, Piano no Mori (a.k.a. Piano Forest: The Perfect World of Kai) is an enchanting animated journey guided by friendship, rivalry, and classical music. Directed by Kojima Masayuki (Monster), this delightful tale of two boys from very different backgrounds with a common love for the piano makes for a tranquil, heartwarming film for all ages. Animation credits are top-notch with esteemed studio Madhouse (Paprika, Millennium Actress) behind the wheels, while world-renowned Russian pianist Vladmir Ashkenazy's participation on the score elevates the film's music to a new level.
